Restoring the heritage ceilings

BWS Mile End - combining heritage with tilt-up construction

Heritage requirements and complex latent site conditions were an intriguing mix in this tilt-up construction of a major retail liquor outlet constructed by Brimblecombe Builders in Adelaide.

The swimming pool buried under rubble and earth was the first surprise, the old cellars the next.

To resolve the heritage concerns, Brimblecombe Builders worked with the project designer to incorporate initiatives to enable the project team to maintain the heritage integrity of the old dwellings demolished to enable the construction of the new building.

Moulds were taken of the original decorative ceilings contained within the soon to be demolished structures.  New fibrous plaster panels were fabricated from the moulds and incorporated into the new structure.

Salvaging leadlight windows - BWS Mile End

Leadlight windows were also salvaged from the demolished buildings and restored to their former elegance and beauty.

These elements then became construction features; the coffered ceiling and the classic leadlight window adding a unique ambience to the store and retaining that inspiring heritage link to the original structure.

The fit-out included the Project Management of all client engaged specialist contractors.

In maintaining the heritage of the original structures, by establishing good relationships with the adjacent neighbours during construction, and achieving complete client satisfaction, this proved to be yet another successful project undertaken by Brimblecombe Builders
